Canada, known to have friendly people and beautiful national parks, is the second largest country in the world. We went to Canada in the beginning of June. During our trip, we quickly realized the mountain weather can change quickly without warning. Tip: Bring some winter clothes, and waterproof jacket and pants.
1. Lake Louise
The top place to go to in the Banff National Park is Lake Louise. The water temperature is below 5 ℃ even during summer, but some people still swim in the lake.
Also, if you are a winter activity lover, plan to come here during winter time, so you can do ice skiing and ice skating.
2. Rat's Nest Cave
Are you looking to challenge yourself? Are you ready to do crawling into tight space? There are a few options Banff offers, and we picked the easy route and took about 2-3 hours to finish. It still required lots of physical work; however, compares to the caves I went to before, I never left a cave feeling so proud of myself.
If you want to learn science outside of a classroom, this is a great place to learn nature and evolution. Unlike seeing fossils at museums, at Mount Stephen, you can actually touch and feel the great work of nature. There is a strict security at this site, and you can only go to this mountain with an official tour guide from Burgess Shale Geo-science Foundation.
4. Hiking at Johnston Canyon
It's about 1.7 miles from Johnston Canyon Lodge to the upper fall of canyon. It took us about two hours to finish the trail. When you get to the upper fall, you can feel water flashes against your face, which is refreshing! The best reward since hiking to the top will get your body warm up!
5. Glacier Adventure
Please dress warm for this hike. The tour guides will provide outdoor winter gears like hat, gloves, boots, jacket, sunglass, ice cleat, hiking pole and pants if needed.
It took us about 4 hours to finish. It was breathtaking to see the top of glacier mountain. Once in a life time experience!
Be sure to check the weather and bring proper gears. Also, I wouldn't suggest book the tickets well ahead of time because you really don't know what's the weather gonna be.
We, on the other side, booked the tickets too early, so we had to kayak at 1°C and with snow. But I don't regret it because this experience forced me to step out of my comfort zone.
The highlight of this trip is the Spirit Island. But unfortunately we had really poor visibility due to winter storm, so we turned around at half way point.
7. See wild animals
While driving around the national park, we have seen some wild animals, which includes caribou, wolf, mountain goat, black bear, and geese. Please be sure to give non-predator 30meter/33yard distance; predator 100meter/110yard when you take pictures.
8. Hiking at Maligne Canyon
It took me about 4 hours to finish the trail. You still can see some small glacier during June time.
9. Sunwapta Falls
If you want to get closer look of the fall, you can take the short hike down to the lower falls. It only takes 10-15 minutes of hiking, but totally worth it.
10. Helicopter Ride
Prior to take off, they will show you a short video explain safety. If this is your first time take helicopter, be sure to pay attention. The trip is only takes 15 minutes. It is a relaxed activity, and you can see the most beautiful scenery from above. If you want a laid-back vacation, this is highly recommended.
